If i can make pieces for a cake ahead of time, i always try to. By Friday i am usually very busy making cakes that if i have my decoration pieces done ahead of time it makes the decorating process SOOOOO much faster!!
I made these pieces on Monday, for Saturday's cake.
Its VERY time consuming to make all the cute details that i want to put on the cake.
If i use molds (like i did for this cake) i use gum paste and cornstarch.
Cornstarch dries out gum paste super fast! Once its pretty dry i will cut the access gum paste away.
If you have a problem with the cornstarch sticking to your gum paste, use Vodka. Use a small paint brush and brush your vodka onto the gum paste or fondant. Let it dry before you put it in the fridge (same with brushing your cake with vodka. if you brush the cake with vodka to remove your corn starch or powdered sugar, make sure the vodka dries (evaporates) before you put it into the refrigerator!) IF YOU DONT LET IT DRY- it will remain wet looking FOREVER!

It made it so much faster to decorate the cake with all my little accent pieces because they were done way before hand.
