I was asked to do a Periodic Table Cake for a friend's son's B-day.
The cake is suppose to be a chalk board with the periodic table of elements on it..

Safari themed tiered baby shower cake

This Safari themed baby shower cake i made for a friend of mine. I did not come up with the design on my own. It was a google image that i tried to replicate.
This cake was a lot of fun to make. Originally i was going to make it without the tree, but the baby daddy wanted the tree! So, i said i would try...

I started the construction of the tree with a PVC pipe and i drilled some holes in it. I then added wire..

I covered the top half with fondant, leaving room for the PVC to enter the cake for support.

I then painted the fondant brown

Covered with more fondant and added leaves to the tree..

I then added fondant vines and sprayed the tree with brown and green edible paint to give it more dimension..

Top Tier- chocolate cake with coconut cream filling
Middle tier - yellow cake with chocolate mousse filling
Bottom tier- raspberry champaign cake with rum whipped custard
All details are fondant and everything except PVC pipe and wires were edible=)

PS- i dont think i would make this tree again because it was almost too heavy for the cake. (fondant is very heavy) It wanted to tilt a bit which was very frustrating!
Also, i rarely do whipped fillings in tier cakes because it is too soft and after a couple hours of sitting out (especially in this heat!) the cake starts to lose its structure..

My Chocolate Cake/Cupcake recipe

This is a picture of my Chocolate Salted Caramel Cake!
4 layers of Chocolate Cake with a caramel filling, and each layer sprinkled with chocolate sea salt!
I get my "special ingredient" (chocolate sea salt) from a store called, "The spice and tea exchange" at Pier 39 in San Francisco. They also have other locations and have a website that you can order from! I love it!
This blog is to tell you my recipe for Chocolate Cake, so here we go.....

Chocolate cake
2 Cups sugar
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 large eggs
1 cup boiling water

i pretty much just throw everything in a bowl and mix, except for the boiling water-add that last. Make sure everything is well incorporated.
bake @ 350 for about 16 minutes (depending on your oven)
*the batter is very watery after you add the cup of boiling water-but don't worry! These cupcakes are nice and fluffy and you will love them!
good luck!!
